PDF - 150 Wonderful Words - Vocabulary, Spelling & Reading
About This Workbook:
Welcome to an exciting journey of words! This workbook is designed to introduce young learners, ages 7 to 11, to the captivating world of complex vocabulary. Through a series of engaging short poems, students will not only enrich their vocabulary but also strengthen their comprehension skills while being challenged to expand their intellectual abilities. Each activity in this workbook provides an opportunity for children to read, write, spell, and truly understand the words they encounter, making the learning process both fun and educational.
Inside, your child will engage in a variety of stimulating activities such as filling in missing words, playing pattern and logic games, identifying vowels, and using new vocabulary in their own creative writing. The possibilities for learning are endless!
This workbook is especially beneficial for students in 2nd and 3rd grades who may be struggling with reading and spelling. The activities are carefully crafted to build a solid foundation for literacy while tapping into a child’s natural curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. Drawing on methods from "The Science of Reading" and the insights of Sarah Janisse Brown, founder of the Fun-Schooling Movement and creator of Dyslexia Games Therapy, this workbook is designed to support children who need extra help with grade-level work. Whether you’re looking to reinforce concepts after school or as part of a homeschool curriculum, this book is a perfect tool to boost literacy skills and help your child overcome reading challenges.
In addition, this workbook is ideal for Summer Bridge learning, offering a head start for the upcoming school year, ensuring that your child feels confident and prepared when they return to school.
How It Works:
This workbook emphasizes the power of collaboration and logic to unlock essential reading, writing, and spelling skills. The short poems are not only inspiring but also filled with humor and creativity, making them easy to remember and fun to explore. While one goal is to equip students with strong academic tools, the greater aim is to spark a sense of wonder, curiosity, and imagination. It encourages students to think critically, dream big, and envision a future full of exciting possibilities. The activities are designed to appeal to a child’s innate drive to build new skills while fostering meaningful connections.
It's important to note that the “Wonderful Words” featured in this workbook are chosen intentionally to challenge young learners. They are not meant to be easy; in fact, children crave complexity, and these words have been carefully selected to inspire collaboration, problem-solving, and confidence-building.
Teacher Instructions:
To get the most out of this workbook, we suggest that the student complete two pages each day. Start by reading the poem together three times, allowing the child to follow along as they listen. On the fourth reading, encourage the student to recite or read the poem independently. After a fifth reading, the child can then work through the activities independently. If the poem prompts any discussion, take the opportunity to engage further and deepen the learning experience.
These activities are not just about reading and writing—they are about building lasting literacy skills while fostering a positive, collaborative, and confident mindset.
